The situation changed dramatically in 1974-75 when Father Nicolas de Cunha, began to systematically collect these refugees onto the Catholic Mission San Agustin.
This settlement began on the Carapa River but then moved to borrowed land on Arroyo Manduvi near Laurel, Alto Paraná.
The Manduvi group was under the direction of Padre Alejandro Pytel, and in 1978 after Padre de Cunha died suddenly, Pytel convinced the Verbo Divino order to purchase new land for a permanent mission.
The entire Manduvi group moved to a new mission, located at Chupa Pou in August 1978.
