The Superman of the radio program, Clayton " Bud " Collyer, believed that at 43 years of age, he was too old to reprise his radio role for television ; moreover, his was, in any event, a completely different physical type.

Kirk Alyn, who had played Superman in two theatrical serials, stated he refused the TV series role for fear of typecasting.

Producers of the series say neither Alyn nor his serial co-stars Noel Neill, Thomas " Butch " Bond, or Pierre Watkin ( who later was considered for the role of Perry White following the death of John Hamilton ), were ever seriously considered for the inaugural season.
