Operation Iraqi Freedom ’ s intelligence collection efforts were enhanced by the initial combat employment of the Air Force ’ s first ( and as of 2012 only ) blended wing: the newly formed 116th Air Control Wing, composed of ANG and active duty Air Force personnel based in Robins AFB, Georgia.

The wing deployed nine of its 11 assigned E-8 Joint STARS aircraft to the Iraqi Freedom theater as well as over 600 unit personnel including one-tenth of the aircrews.

Air Guardsmen composed about one-fourth of the Wing ’ s deployed personnel.
