G. J.
Ramstedt and E. D.
Polivanov in the 1920s advocated the inclusion of Korean.
Ramstedt's two-volume magnum opus, Einführung in die altaische Sprachwissenschaft (' Introduction to Altaic Linguistics ') was published in 1952 – 1957.
He rejected the Ural – Altaic hypothesis, included Korean in Altaic, an inclusion followed by most leading Altaicists to date.
The first volume, Lautlehre (' Phonology '), contained the first comprehensive attempt to identify regular correspondences between the sound systems of the Altaic language families.
In 1960, Nicholas Poppe presented what was in effect a heavily revised version of Ramstedt ’ s volume on phonology that has since set the standard in Altaic studies.
