At 14, Anne was betrothed by her father to Richard, youngest brother of Yorkist king Edward IV of England ; he would later be Richard III of England.

Anne's father, dissatisfied with the rewards he had received for helping Edward gain the throne, compared with the favours lavished on the Woodville family, changed sides and allied himself with Margaret of Anjou, Queen consort of the ousted Lancastrian king Henry VI.

Margaret harboured suspicions about Warwick's motives, particularly since Anne's sister, Isabella, was married to the reigning king's brother, George, Duke of Clarence.
