In medicine before the 20th century, an anodyne was a drug that was believed to relieve or soothe pain by lessening the sensitivity of the brain or nervous system ( Greek ἀνώδυνος anōdynos < ἀν-an-' without ' + ὀδύνη odynē ' pain ').
