Born in San Pietro di Gorizia ( Šempeter-Vrtojba ), he earned a degree in mathematics and engineering at the University of Padua.
Later he became director of the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri and a professor at the University of Florence.
He died in Arcetri.
