The family consists of a single genus Xeronema with two species, one found only on the Poor Knights islands in New Zealand and the other in New Caledonia.
The inflorescence is crowded with quite large, radial symmetrical flowers, which face upwards.
The stamens are strongly exserted ( i. e. extend out of the flower ).
The family is still poorly known.
