This part of the Annales occurs only in manuscripts of a late date, and is largely derived from earlier sources.
Additionally, the wording in the entry is very similar to a mention in the Historia of a different battle, Guinnion.
According to the Historia, at Guinnion, Arthur " carried the image of holy Mary ever virgin on his shoulders ", and put his enemy to flight.
Scholars such as Thomas Jones and N. J. Higham argue that the Annales entry is based directly on the Historia, with the obscure battle of Guinnion replaced with the more famous Badon, and the icon of Mary replaced with the more common cross.
