During the " Troubles " in Northern Ireland, booby trap bombs were often used by the Provisional Irish Republican Army ( IRA ) to kill British Army soldiers and Royal Ulster Constabulary officers.
A common method was attaching the bomb to a vehicle so that starting or driving it would detonate the explosive.
According to the Sutton Index of Deaths, 180 deaths during the Troubles were the result of booby trap bombs, the vast majority of them laid by the Provisional IRA.
