As a young man, Gyula Halász studied painting and sculpture at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts ( Magyar Képzomuvészeti Egyetem ) in Budapest.
He joined a cavalry regiment of the Austro-Hungarian army, where he served until the end of the First World War.
