In January 2009, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced a joint study to determine whether the ocean off the California coast was serving as a carbon source or a carbon sink.
Principal instrumentation for the study will be self-contained CO < sub > 2 </ sub > monitors placed on buoys in the ocean.
They will measure the partial pressure of CO < sub > 2 </ sub > in the ocean and the atmosphere just above the water surface .< ref >
