The first four censuses ( 1801 – 1831 ) were mainly headcounts and contained little personal information.
The 1841 Census, conducted by the General Register Office, was the first to record the names of everyone in a household or institution.
From 1851 onwards the census shows the stated age and relationship to the head of household for each individual.
Because of World War II, there was no census in 1941.
The actual census dates were 1841-06-06, 1851-03-30, 1861-04-07, 1871-04-02, 1881-04-03, 1891-04-05, 1901-03-31, 1911-03-27.
