Typically, change ringers using handbells sit or stand in a circle ( like tower ringers ).

The towerbell terms of handstroke and backstroke are retained, referring to an upwards and downwards ring of the bell respectively ; and as in towers, the ringing proceeds in alternate rows of handstroke and backstroke.
