In 1962, Lean made his most famous film, Lawrence of Arabia, about a British officer who unites the tribes of the Arab peninsula to fight in World War One.

The film made actor Peter O ' Toole a star and won several more academy awards for Lean, including best picture and best director.

Lawrence of Arabia continues to appear on lists of the greatest films ever made, and frequently comes in first on lists of the greatest " epic " films.

Filmmakers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have cited the picture as a major source of inspiration for their own work.
