The first departure from this design came when Brother Richard Lonergan, Cornell 1892, had his badge made retaining the diamond in the center but had the Delta mounted in black enamel.

An early description of the badge stated that the Delta was jeweled or enameled to suit the owner with a diamond usually surmounting the center.

The Chi was jeweled with one garnet on each arm.
