The Red Wings opened the 2006 – 07 season with Nicklas Lidström as the new captain.
The team retired Steve Yzerman's jersey number 19 on January 2.
The Wings finished first in the Western Conference and tied for first in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres, but the Sabres were awarded the Presidents ' Trophy by virtue of having the greater number of wins.
They advanced to the third round of the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs after defeating the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks both in six games, coming back three straight after the Sharks ' 2 – 1 series lead.
The Red Wings lost to the eventual Stanley Cup winning team-the Anaheim Ducks, in the Western Conference Finals four games to two.
