* German uses the three so-called umlauts ä, ö and ü.
These diacritics indicate vowel changes.
For instance the word Ofen ( English: oven ) has the plural Öfen ( ovens ).
The sign originated in a superscript e ; a handwritten Sütterlin e resembles two parallel vertical lines, like an umlaut.
