In 1860, Lady L. Smith, the wife of the first Bishop of Victoria and the Society for the Promotion of Female Education in the Far East ( FES ) established a girls ' school affiliated with the Diocese of the Anglican denomination in Hong Kong.
It was given the name Diocesan Native Female Training School ( DNFTS, 曰字樓女館 ), and Lady Robinson, the wife of the Governor, became the patroness.
According to the constitution, it aimed " to introduce among a somewhat superior class of native females the blessings of Christianity and of religious training ".
The Committee started the school on Bonham Road, with a small concrete house on a paddy field.
It accommodated teaching, boarding and all the activities.
