Dorothy Gale is the protagonist of many of the Oz novels by American author L. Frank Baum, and the best friend of Oz's ruler Princess Ozma.

Dorothy first appears in Baum's classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and reappears in most of its sequels.

She also is the main character in various adaptations, notably the classic 1939 movie adaptation of the book, The Wizard of Oz.

Even when she does not appear in a sequel ( as in the case of The Marvelous Land of Oz ), she is arguably the most important character in the series, as it is she, through her actions in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, who sparked later events.
