Nineteen thirty-three was an ugly year in Germany when the racial laws of the new Nazi regime were enacted.
On April 6 Husserl was suspended from the University of Freiburg by the Badische Ministry of Culture ; the following week he was disallowed any university activities.
Yet his colleague Heidegger was elected Rektor of the university on April 21 – 22, and joined the Nazi party.
By contrast, in July Husserl resigned from the Deutsche Academie.
