While effective encopresis treatments combining medical and behavioral components exist, there can be barriers to treatment delivery.

These barriers include lack of professionals trained in both the medical and behavioral elements of encopresis treatment, geographic location of specialty providers, the amount of time and costs spent in delivering treatment ( this includes doctor fees, transportation, and time away from both work and school ), and the distress involved for children and parents to engage in treatment.
