European Portuguese ( português europeu in Portuguese, ) refers to the variety of Portuguese spoken in continental Portugal, as well as the Azores and Madeira islands.

The word “ European ” was chosen to avoid the clash of “ Portuguese Portuguese ” as opposed to Brazilian Portuguese.
