By 1999, estimates provided by the State Sports Commission suggest there were 60 to 70 millions Falun Gong practitioners in China.

Wu Shaozu, an official from China's National Sports Commission, was at this time quoted in an interview with U. S. News & World Report that as many as 100 million may have taken up Falun Gong and other forms of qigong.

Wu noted that the popularity of these practices dramatically reduces health care costs, and that " Premier Zhu Rongji is very happy about that.
