Max eats one of the strawberries but, unlike in the restaurant, this time experiences an allergic reaction and suffocates.

As he lay choking, Max accepts the reality of his death when suddenly he's resuscitated by Lauren.

He survives and ( it's implied ) recovers his emotional connection to his family and to the world.
