When the early months of the Korean War showed how poorly prepared the Defense Department was, Truman fired Secretary Louis A. Johnson and named Marshall as Secretary of Defense in September 1950.
On September 30, Defense Secretary George Marshall sent an eyes-only message to MacArthur instructing MacArthur to escalate the war in Korea " We want you to feel unhampered tactically and strategically to proceed north of the 38th parallel.
" His main role was to restore confidence and rebuild the armed forces from the post-war state of demobilization.
He served in that post for one year, retiring from public office for good in September 1951.
In 1952, he represented America at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
