In the early Common Era, Haman was the seat of Ara Gaya, a leading state of the Gaya confederacy.

Many relics from this period are still preserved in the county.

After the fall of Gaya, Haman was absorbed into Silla as Asirang-gun ; in 757 its name was changed to Haman-gun, which it bears today.
