While hardcore punk was declining in many American cities, New York City was becoming an even bigger epicenter for hardcore, particularly the youth crew movement.

Influenced by Bl ' ast, and Uniform Choice, Youth of Today spearheaded the movement, which went further than straight edge by lyrically expressing views against drugs, alcohol and promiscuous sex, and views in favor of vegetarianism or veganism.

In the late 1980s, other New York bands associated with youth crew included Bold, Gorilla Biscuits and Side by Side.

Youth crew spread beyond New York to Southern California bands such as Chain of Strength and Inside Out.
