In 1964, Cuba supported the Simba Rebellion of adherents of Patrice Lumumba in Congo-Leopoldville ( present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo ).

Among the insurgents was Laurent-Désiré Kabila, who would overthrow long-time dictator Mobutu 30 years later.

However, the 1964 rebellion ended in failure.
