* In Indochina the French government was facing the Viet Minh communist rebels and lost its Indochinese colonies during the First Indochina War in 1954 after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.

Vietnam was divided in two states while Cambodia and Laos were made independent.

France left Indochina only to be replaced there by the United States, which would soon be engaged in the long Vietnam War.
