In 2008, Kosovo's declaration of independence saw a marked deterioration in Russia's relationship with the West.
It also saw South Ossetia war against Georgia, that followed the Georgia's attempt to take over the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
Russian troops entered South Ossetia and forced Georgian troops back, establishing their control on this territory.
In the fall of 2008, Russia unilaterally recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
