After the Hut Tax War there was no more large-scale military resistance to colonialism.
Resistance and dissent continued, but took other forms.
Vocal political dissent came mainly from the Creoles, who had a sizeable middle and upper class of business-people and European-educated professionals such as doctors and lawyers.
In the mid 19th century they had enjoyed a period of considerable political influence, but in the late 19th century the government became much less open to them.
