After Japan's defeat in 1945, due to the help of Seri Thai, American support mitigated Allied terms, although the British demanded repatriations in the form of rice sent to Malaya, and the French, return of territories lost in the Franco-Thai War.
In exchange for supporting Thailand's admission to the United Nations, the Soviet Union demanded repeal of anticommunist legislation.
It should also be noted that some former British POW's erected a monument expressing gratitude to the citizens of Ubon Ratchathani.
In the postwar period, Thailand had close relations with the United States, which it saw as a protector from communist revolutions in neighboring countries.
