Overall, from about 1910, American films had the largest share of the market in all European countries except France, and even in France, the American films had just pushed the local production out of first place on the eve of World War I.

So even if the war had not happened, American films may have become dominant worldwide.

Although the war made things much worse for European producers, the technical qualities of American films made them increasingly attractive to audiences everywhere.
