19th-century South Africa did not attract mass Irish migration, but Irish communities are to be found in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Kimberley, and Johannesburg, with smaller communities in Pretoria, Barberton, Durban and East London.
Both the Cape Colony and the Colony of Natal had Irish prime ministers: Sir Thomas Upington, " The Afrikaner from Cork "; and Sir Albert Hime, from Kilcoole in County Wicklow.
Irish settlers were brought in small numbers over the years, as from other parts of the United Kingdom.
A large contingent of Irish troops fought in the Anglo-Boer War on both sides and a few of them stayed in South Africa after the war.
Places in South Africa named after Irish people include Upington, Porterville, Caledon, Cradock, Sir Lowry's Pass, the Biggarsberg Mountains, Donnybrook, Himeville and Belfast.
