In Gruber-De Gasperi Agreement ( 1946 ), South Tyrol and Trentino provinces were declared part of Italy, but the region was granted autonomy.
The German-speaking majority of South Tyrol was dissatisfied with the agreement.
Consequently, an underground organization named South Tyrolean Liberation Committee tried to achieve self-determination for South Tyrol, secession from Italy and unification with Austria via terrorist acts.
In 1971, a new treaty was signed, granting more autonomy to the province.
The new agreement proved broadly satisfactory and the separatist tensions soon eased.
However, secessionist parties ( like Lega Nord, South Tyrolean Freedom and Citizens ' Union ) still exist.
