Digambaras believe that Mahavira remained unmarried, whereas Svetambaras believe Mahavira married a woman who bore him a daughter.

The two sects also differ on the origin of Mata Trishala, Mahavira's mother.

Digambaras believe that only the first five lines are formally part of the Namokar Mantra ( the main Jain prayer ), whereas Svetambaras believe all nine form the mantra.

Other differences are minor and not based on major points of doctrine.
