Having been a councillor on Norfolk County Council, she was Private Secretary and political assistant to John Major as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Prime Minister.
She was educated at Wycombe Abbey and obtained a degree in economics from Girton College, Cambridge, and a postgraduate qualification in economics from the University of East Anglia, prior to joining the Conservative Research Department.
She was elected to Parliament for Newbury at the 1992 election.
She died ( after only 316 days as an MP ) during a routine hospital operation.
The resulting by-election was won by David Rendel, a Liberal Democrat.
