The BBC producer Leslie Bridgemont was responsible for a show called Merry-go-Round, which featured, in weekly rotation, shows based on the Army, Navy and RAF.
In 1944 he gave Horne and Murdoch a trial, and Much-Binding, with Horne as " an officer so dim that even the other officers noticed " and Murdoch as his harassed second-in-command, became a popular hit.
In 1944, Horne met and fell in love with Marjorie Thomas, a war widow with a young daughter.
