A single manic episode is sufficient to diagnose bipolar I disorder.

Hypomania may be indicative of Bipolar II Disorder or Cyclothymia.

Several types of " mania " such as kleptomania and pyromania are related more closely to obsessive-compulsive disorder than to bipolar disorder, depending on the severity of these disorders.

For instance, someone with kleptomania who suffers from impulses to steal things such as pencils, pens, and paperclips is better diagnosed with a form of OCD.
