After a master tape of a rough draft of Gaye's In Our Lifetime?
album was stolen and taken to Motown's Los Angeles headquarters in 1980, Motown remixed the album and released it on January 15, 1981.
When he learned of its release, Gaye accused Motown of editing and remixing the album without his consent, allowing the issue of an unfinished production (" Far Cry "), altering the album art of his request and removing the album title's question mark, muting its irony.
Gaye then promised not to record any more music for Motown.
In February 1981, under the advice of music promoter Freddy Couseart, Gaye relocated to Couseart's apartment in Ostend, Belgium where he briefly was able to back away from drug usage and got his confidence back.
He spent a month on a short tour of England and two performances in Ostend later that year.
His attorney until his death, Curtis Shaw, said Gaye's Ostend period was " the best thing that ever happened to Marvin ".
In March 1982, Motown and CBS Records negotiated for Gaye to be released from Motown, but didn't release the contents of their contract fearing a negative effect on Gaye's settlement to pay his creditors.
