The city is served by Memphis City Schools, while surrounding suburbs in other areas of Shelby County are served by Shelby County Schools.

However, on March 8, 2011, residents voted to disband Memphis City Schools, effectively merging it with the Shelby County School District.

The merger will take effect effective the start of the 2013-14 school year.
