During 1977, at age 65, Friedman retired from the University of Chicago after teaching there for 30 years.
He and his wife moved to San Francisco where he became a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
From 1977 on, he was affiliated with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
During the same year, Friedman was approached by the Free To Choose Network and asked to create a television program presenting his economic and social philosophy.
