The Nebraska Cornhuskers Women's track and field team was created in the 1975-76 academic year and started competing in the 1976 season in the Big 8 conference.
The starting coach, Roger Capan, would only be at Nebraska for one season before leaving the program ; he was replaced by Carol Frost, who stayed at Nebraska through the 1980 season.
The current coach, Gary Pepin, took over the program in 1981 and has led the women huskers to three national titles.
The NCAA started awarding the national title for Women's Track and Field in 1983, prior to that the award was given by the AIAW.
