In reality the most part of New Guinea remained outside of colonial influence.
Little was known about the interior ; large areas on the map were white and the number of inhabitants of the island was unknown, and numerous explorations were made into the interior from the turn of the 20th century on.
The indigenous inhabitants of New Guinea were Papuans, living in tribes.
