In spite of the relative success of new towns in the London Metropolitan green belt, London continued to suffer from a chronic housing shortage, especially in the south-east.

Another small New Town, Thamesmead, was developed adjacent to the Thames in the early 1960s but suffered from poor transport links.

Some improvement in infrastructure has been seen subsequently.
