In the West Virginia Senate, most of Ohio County is part of the first Senate district along with Hancock and Brooke counties.

The current State Senators for the first district are Orphy Klempa from Ohio County and Jack Yost from Brooke County.

State Senate seats are elected in staggered four-year terms.

Yost's seat is up for election in 2012, and Klempa's seat is up for election in 2014.

Portions of Wheeling Island, Downtown Wheeling, and South Wheeling are segmented in the second Senate district.

The current States Senators for the second district are Senate President Jeffrey V. Kessler and Scott Varner who are both from Marshall County.
