Reverend Charles E. Cobbey, the pastor of the First Christian Church, blamed the Omaha Bee for inflaming the situation.

He was reported to have said, " It is the belief of many that the entire responsibility for the outrage can be placed at the feet of a few men and one Omaha paper.

" The inflammatory yellow journalism of the Bee is credited by several historians for stoking emotions for the riot.
