OpenOffice. org inherited many features from the original StarOffice upon which it was based, including the OpenOffice. org XML file format which it retained until version 2, when the ISO / IEC standard OpenDocument Format ( ODF ) replaced it.

Sun subsidized the development of OpenOffice. org in order to use it as a base for its commercial proprietary StarOffice application software.

Following the acquisition of Sun by Oracle, StarOffice and StarSuite became known as Oracle Open Office for the 3. 3 release.

In April 2011, Oracle announced the discontinuation of Oracle Open Office as part of the decision to turn OpenOffice. org into a " purely community-based project ".
