From 2003 to 2005 Overton was the seat of government of the Republic of Texas, a separatist group who are an independence movement that claims that the annexation of Texas by the United States was illegal and that Texas remains an independent nation under occupation.

The Republic of Texas headquarters burned down in August 2005.
